SELF EXAMINATION

John Wesley's Holy Club
QuestionsThese are 22 questions the members of John Wesley's Holy Club asked themselves every day in their private devotions over 200 years ago.
1. Am I consciously or unconsciously creating the impression that I am better than I relly am? In other words, am I a hypocrite?
2. Am I honest in all my acts and words, or do I exaggerate?
3. Do I confidentially pass on to another what was told to me in confidence?
4. Can I be trusted?
5. Am I a slave to dress, friends, work, or habits?
6. Am I self-conscious, self-pitying, or self-justifying?
7. Did the Bible live in me today?
8. Do I give it time to speak to me everyday?
9. Am I enjoying prayer?
10. When did I last speak to someone else about my faith?
11. Do I pray about the money I spend?
12. Do I get to bed on time and get up on time?
13. Do I disobey God in anything?
14. Do I insist upon doing something about which my conscience is uneasy?
15. Am I defeated in any part of my life?
16. Am I jealous, impure, critical, irritable, touchy, or distrustful?
17. How do I spend my spare time?
18. Am I proud?
19. Do I thank God that I am not as other people, especially as the Pharisees who despised the publican?
20. Is there anyone whom I fear, dislike, disown, criticize, hold a resentment toward or disregard? If so, what am I doing about it?
21. Do I grumble or complain constantly?
22. Is Christ real to me?
I went back and looked for a number six....so I just copied the whole thing over again.....thanks ladies for your keen eyes.......

You get such good material! I will definetly copy these questions out. If this was a one time pass or fail test I fear I would fail...I can certainly see the benefit to doing this "self" examination daily! I think one would put their heart, mind, and will into "passing". Thanks~Dawne
@DawneElla - you know I would fail too......miserably so........
@SunnySusan - hey I just noticed as I was copying these down there's no #6????
Tough questions and even tougher answers if we are honest with ourselves. Good and thought provoking! I found this while reading a little after reading your post. This is from his mother in a letter to him...
"Take this rule: whatever weakens your reason, impairs the tenderness of your conscience, obscures your sense of God, or takes off your relish of spiritual things; in short, whatever increases the strength and authority of your body over your mind, that thing is sin to you, however innocent it may be in itself."
-- Susanna Wesley (Letter, June 8, 1725)
Wow.....thanks Susan for posting that list.
That's very cool. You do come up with the most unique items to post!
@DawneElla - ha ha....when I copied them ..... and then I just looked again....no #6
I just noticed that is no Number 6. Any idea what happened to it? I'll see if I can find it online...
Found it! It was actually No. 5 that was missing.
@BooksForMe - just edited the whole post again....
well thank-you....that's an important one!
Came her on reccomendation...This is great. Thanks!
Good morning, Susan! what a great post....certain to keep us all humble rather than proud...and since pride is something that God hates, a worthwhile list to ponder every day! I don't know many people that could pass it completely, but it certainly gives clear directions on which whay to turn!
Yikes! If you didn't pass did you simple remove yourself from the club or would they have kicked me out?
I might have to email that to myself....what an eye opener.
@slgb65 - I would have been kicked to the curb on the first day....hmmmm....did they have curbs back then...hmmmm....♥
Great questions to make us sit up and take stock of our lives and attitudes! I know I fail, time and time again, but thanks be to God, His mercies are new every morning! RYC: Glad you came by Sunday! I'm still around, just haven't posted as much as I'd like. Miss Elizabeth is still healing through the aplastic anemia/bone marrow transplant, and that occupies our time ... also I found out a dear friend has breast cancer, which is pretty tough ... and then there's just life happening in general. Hope all is well with you! You have a blessed Tuesday! Hugs ~ Deborah <><
Wow, that's a great one. Humbling. D
very good and humbling questions...but thank goodness for Christ's righteousness which is outside of us...we can always meditate on His obedience in safety and confidence
